The generation of a Savannah cat dramatically affects its size, temperament, and price. This guide explains exactly what F1, F2, and F3 Savannah cats are and which is right for you.
Savannah cats are hybrids between the African Serval and domestic cats. The generation (F1, F2, F3 etc.) refers to how many generations removed from the Serval the cat is.
F1 Savannah Cat ($10,000-$20,000) 50% Serval. The largest generation, often 20-25 lbs. Most wild in temperament. Often require permits. Not legal in all states.
F2 Savannah Cat ($5,000-$10,000) 25% Serval. Still large (15-20 lbs) but noticeably calmer than F1. Fewer legal restrictions. Better for families.
F3 Savannah Cat ($2,000-$5,000) 12.5% Serval. Approaching domestic cat temperament while retaining the striking spotted appearance. Legal virtually everywhere.
F4 and Beyond ($1,000-$2,500) Less than 10% Serval. Mostly domestic cat temperament. Legal everywhere. Still retain the beautiful spotted coat.
Which is Right for You? If you want the most exotic experience and can commit to significant enrichment and space, an F1 or F2 is extraordinary. If you want a manageable exotic pet that is legal everywhere, F3 or F4 is the perfect choice.
