Setting up your ball python enclosure correctly from day one is crucial. This step-by-step guide covers everything from choosing the right enclosure to placing hides.
Getting your ball python setup right before bringing your snake home is one of the most important things you can do. A properly set up enclosure means a healthy, feeding snake.
Step 1: Choose Your Enclosure PVC enclosures are the gold standard. For hatchlings use a tub or small enclosure (20-gallon). Adults need 4x2x2 foot minimum.
Step 2: Set Up Heating Under-tank heater on one-third of the floor, thermostat connected. Add a ceramic heat emitter or radiant heat panel for ambient heating.
Step 3: Add Your Thermostats Never trust a heater without a thermostat. Use digital temperature gauges with probes on both the warm and cool sides.
Step 4: Choose Substrate Best options: Cypress mulch, coconut fiber, or a bioactive mix. Depth: 3-4 inches minimum.
Step 5: Add Hides One hide on the warm side, one on the cool side. Hides should be snug â the snake must feel enclosed. Brain hides, half logs, or commercial reptile hides all work.
Step 6: Water Bowl Large enough for the snake to soak in. Clean and refill every 2-3 days.
Step 7: Decor (Optional) Fake plants, cork bark, and climbing branches add enrichment and help the snake feel secure.
