Arowana are unlike any other aquarium fish. These prehistoric-looking predators have been on Earth for 100 million years and are considered living fossils. In Asian culture, they represent prosperity, strength and good luck — earning them the nickname Dragon Fish.

Types of Arowana

Silver Arowana ($30-$200) — Native to the Amazon. The only arowana legal in the USA without permits.

Golden Crossback Arowana ($5,000-$10,000) — From Malaysia. Gold scales cross the entire back. CITES listed.

Platinum Arowana ($50,000-$400,000) — The rarest arowana. A genetic mutation producing pure white/silver fish. Some individual fish have sold for $400,000.

Tank Requirements Arowana need very large tanks — minimum 250 gallons for adults. They are powerful jumpers and tanks must have secure lids.

Legal Status USA Asian arowana (Golden, Red, Platinum) are banned in the USA under the Endangered Species Act. Only Silver Arowana are legal in the USA without special permits.
